Filling up is leading to empty wallets and consumers are ready for a change. The California Center for Sustainable Energy(CCSE) focused on those changes at the 2nd annual Street Smart event. Hundreds of attendees cruised CCSE’s parking lot checking out the latest hybrid vehicles, electric cars, hybrid scooters and other fuel alternatives displayed throughout the green transportation fair. Street Smart provided education and outreach through informative workshops on hypermiling and alternate transit options. Speakers from SANDAG and UCAN offered insight on how these elements can save money and the planet.
The director of the award winning documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car,” Chris Paine, took the stage as this years keynote speaker. It was standing room only for both of Paine’s packed presentations as he told the story of the rise and fall of the first electric vehicle, the EV1. The Solar taxi driver, Louis Palmer, also presented to a packed room. Palmer talked about how, with some help from the sun, he is making a solar powered trip around the world. His trip brought him right here to CCSE and he received a standing ovation from fair goers.
The sponsors of the event showcased their green awareness. Toyota, Street Smart’s main sponsor, exhibited the latest model Prius. Honda displayed their Compressed Natural Gas vehicle and Akeena Solar provided power for the event with their Solar Truck.
Street Smart 2008 proved to be a success, driving the community in the right direction!

Feeling the pain at the pump? It’s the perfect time to get Street Smart. The California Center for Sustainable Energy’s (CCSE) FREE annual Street Smart event showcases green transportation strategies.
A variety of alternative fuel vehicles will be on display and representatives will be on hand to answer questions. Attend the event workshops to find out “Who Killed the Electric Car,” and get tips from the experts on ‘hypermiling’ and alternative fuel vehicle technologies.
Plus, going green can help you get lower car insurance rates and better loans; find out how at Street Smart! You’ll also learn how to get cash back for the purchase of a new alternative fuel vehicle through CCSE’s Fueling Alternatives (SM) Rebate Program funded by the California Air Resources Board.
The goal of the program is to reduce vehicle emissions and dependence on petroleum-based fuels in California by encouraging the use of alternative fuel vehicles.
By doing so, it supports the commercialization of new technologies and helps to increase production and acceptance of these vehicles.
Plus, he’s driving around the world with help from the sun! Experience the Solar Taxi and hear from its driver, Louis Palmer, a man on a solar-powered mission. Palmer is now more than halfway through his trip, in an effort to bring awareness to alternatives to fossil-fuel based transportation. The solar-powered Solar Taxi will be on exhibit at the event.
Representatives from CCSE’s other sustainable energy programs will be on hand to answer questions and give you options for “Greening Your World (SM)”.
